Job Title: Ranch Manager

Location: Hempstead, Texas

Salary: TBD with insruance, 401K, paid time off

Ranch Description: 

Ranch manager needed on +/- 1,000 acres, full-time, including some morning and evening chores on weekends and holidays. Cow/calf, beef finishing, and retail operation. Must be experienced in all aspects of ranching and maintenance with relevant experience shown in resume. College level ranching training is desirable. Must know or be willing to learn Holistic Management, Grass fed/Grass finished, Animal Welfare procedures and rotational grazing, raising registered Akaushi cattle and Commercial Brangus / Baldy cattle. General knowledge of wildlife and seasonal hunting operations.  A resume with references is required.


Job Description: 

Infrastructure

  • Maintain ranch infrastructures such as fences, ponds, roads, corrals, water systems, housing, deer blinds, and buildings including construction, repair, and maintenance
  • Operate and maintain all ranch equipment including vehicles, tractors, trailers and feeders
  • Plant grasses and perform wildlife habitat improvements
  • Special projects as assigned including ranch beautification (lawn mowing, weed eating, barn cleaning, vehicle cleaning, etc.)
  • Help maintain ranch records for cattle operations and hunting

Cattle and Livestock

  • Monitor cattle herd by performing visual inspections of livestock, food, and water sources
  • Develop an annual cattle plan specifically around pasture rotation, breeding and calving cycles, buying and selling, including:
  • Monitor pasture conditions
  • Corral animals for vaccinations, branding and testing
  • Transport animals to market or other lease locations
  • Identify and determine proper treatment for sick animals
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare

Wildlife

  • Maintain and monitor available water sources
  • Maintain and Fill protein and corn feeders
  • Run game cameras and log photos
  • Perform game surveys
  • Assist with Hunting Operations as needed
  • Maintain high standards of animal welfare
  • Ability to clean, cape, and quarter wildlife

Administrative

  • Maintain cattle records in the software database
  • Ability to use spreadsheets to analyze data collected on cattle
  • Design strategy and set goals for growth
  • Maintain budgets and optimize expenses
  • Set policies and procedures for independent contractors
  • Oversee recruitment and training of independent contractors
  • Evaluate and improve operations and financial performance
  • Prepare regular inventory reports for management
  • Ensure implementation of health and safety regulations

 

 

Other Job Responsibilities:

  • Represent ranch in a professional manner at all times
  • Assist with any other ranch activities as assigned by ranch owner to aid in the development of ranching and wildlife operations

Work Schedule:

  • 8 hour workday Monday to Friday
  • Ability to work weekends on call or upon request to assist with hunting and/or livestock operations

Qualifications:
  • Possess organizational and leadership skills
  • Knowledge of Ranch related business processes and functions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contract employees and ownership
  • Ability to operate independently with minimal day-to-day supervision
  • Safety conscious in all decisions
  • Operate and maintain heavy equipment
  • Accurately solve problems
  • Ability to complete multiple, diverse tasks of differing priorities
  • Competent computer skills (Microsoft Office Suite)
  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations regarding hunting
  • Ability to traverse terrain and work independently in harsh conditions
  • First aid skills
  • Must have a valid driver’s license in good standing, the ability to be an approved driver for the company and to safely opperate vehicles
  • Working knowledge of septic, well, electrical, mechanical and HVAC systems a plus
  • Minimum GED or High School Diploma
  • BSc/BA in Business Ag or relevant field a plus, but not required

Description:

As the lodge manager on this Athens, Texas ranch, you will responsible for the oversite, maintenance and upkeep of the Lodge and grounds. The duties to be completed and overseen by you include but will not be limited to:

  • Caring for the family's 20,000 square foot main lodge, 4 guest houses and several employee houses
  • Day to day management of the landscape crew, cleaning crew, handy man, orchard worker and general contractors
  • Cleaning and maintenance of an 80,000 gallon pool
  • Responsible for the ranch chicken coop and orchard (Fruits and Berries)  
  • Assist ranch manager with paperwork, including payroll and accounting
  • Grocery shopping
  • Driving to and from Dallas and Tyler for special trips if items can’t be secured from Athens
  • Making online purchases per owners’ requests
  • Coordinating with family’s personal chef, baby sitters and nanny staff
  • Planning and setting up for holidays, business meetings, parties etc.
  • Will need to answer texts, emails, some phone calls periodically on weekends.  Will need to work some weekends but mostly just be available with phone.

Qualifications:
  • Prefer someone with a 4-year degree
  • Prefer to be bilingual Spanish and English.  
  • Hotel management, Estate management or previous ranch or plantation house management skills required.  
  • Candidate must be highly organized
  • Proficient on a computer, scanner, printer, Microsoft office and able to develop excel spreadsheets.
  • Must pass highly detailed personal background check. Family is very private and expects proper discretion etc.
